Market Desk (sports): Asia Cup 2022 shifted from Sri Lanka to the UAE and 9 team competitions will be played in T20 format.
The 2022 Asia Cup will be played in UAE while still being officially hosted by Sri Lanka, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) said in a statement on Wednesday. The ACC said that the tournament has been moved to the UAE “considering the prevailing situation in Sri Lanka”. It will be played from 27th August to 11th September, 2022.
In this regard, Sri Lankan Cricket Board (SLC) Secretary Mohan De Silva said that a tournament of this quality requires not only the member countries but also other partners such as broadcasters, sponsors. The partners do not think the current situation in Sri Lanka is conducive to organizing the tournament.
He also said that normally the money raised from broadcasting and ground rights is taken by the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). At the end of the tournament it is distributed among the participating teams. Apart from this, a portion of the remaining funds is given to the organizer. This is the host fee. UAE will only get money from ticket sales. They will spend this money in organizing the tournament.
The Asia Cup last held in 2018 and serve as preparation for the World Cup in October. It will start with a qualifying round of matches between UAE, Kuwait, Singapore and Hong Kong. The winner will go on to the main tournament and play Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.
