6 dead, 29 missing after migrant boat capsizes off Libya coast

Market Desk (online): Libya, wracked by a decade of conflict and lawlessness has become a key departure point for African and Asian migrants making desperate attempts to reach EuropeThe bodies of 6 people have been retrieved while 29 others are missing and presumed dead,’ tweeted the International Organization for Migration. 

The IOM said the sinking took place off the coast of the western Libyan city of Sabratha. People from Africa use this terrifying Mediterranean route to get to Europe.

The agency said the bodies of 6 people have been recovered so far but it is believed that the remaining 29 were also buried in the incident. The boat is believed to have sunk on Friday. It was not immediately clear why or how the boat sank.

Libya is one of the illegal routes to Europe by sea from Asia or Africa. Immigrant asylum seekers are often reported to have drowned off the coast of the country.

From January to April of this year, 476 people were died in a boat sinking off the coast of Libya in the Mediterranean. In the last one week, 53 people have lost their lives.
